System Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine

Banner Health and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center are actively recruiting for a System Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine. This individual will serve as a clinical leader of transfusion medicine services for a comprehensive healthcare system. The successful applicant is expected to have outstanding knowledge and experience in all aspects of clinical transfusion medicine, including successful implementation of and continued leadership in patient blood management and utilization initiatives, leadership experience, and excellent organizational, management, and communication skills.
The System Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine will provide vital medical leadership, ensuring high-quality patient care, patient safety and regulatory compliance while advancing transfusion medicine practices across Banner Health, one of the largest non-profit healthcare systems in the country. Banner includes 33 acute-care hospitals in six states, and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center (BMDACC) provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care in Arizona and northern Colorado in partnership with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Position Responsibilities:
Deliver medical direction by applying deep technical knowledge and specialized expertise to guide system technical specialists, facility blood bank leaders, and technical staff.
Provide clinical consultation with respect to transfusion-related issues for BMDACC and Banner patients to ensure optimal outcomes.
Lead transfusion-related quality improvement initiatives and blood product utilization and management for the system.
Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and with accreditation standards (CAP, AABB, TJC, FACT), and collaborate with laboratory leaders to translate complex regulatory language into practical, actionable, and standardized procedures and protocols to ensure patient safety and mitigate risk.
Collaborate with system technical specialists on staff development initiatives.
Keep well-informed regarding advances in transfusion medicine practice to support ongoing enhancement of services.
Minimum Qualifications Include:
MD, DO, or MBBS degree required
Board certification in Clinical Pathology with subspecialty certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine
Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Arizona
At least 5 years of experience providing and leading transfusion medicine services in a multi-hospital system
Experience providing transfusion medicine services for patients in a comprehensive cancer center
Experience implementing and running a comprehensive patient blood management program
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Familiarity with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards
Preferred Qualifications Include:
Clinical training and experience in apheresis and cellular therapy laboratory operations
