This position is within the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service for Boise Health Care located at the Caldwell VA Clinic in Caldwell, Idaho. The Medical Technician performs a variety of functions, including accession specimens into computer system; collects, evaluates, and processes patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructs and assists patients; and sends out specimens for testing. Making gross visual observations, identifying subtle changes regarding the patient's condition, and notifying appropriate emergency personnel as needed. Preparing specimens for testing, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc., preparing reagents, performing the test procedure, verifying the accuracy of the results and reporting results. Operating centrifuges, reporting any malfunction to supervisor, as needed, and evaluating temperature requirements of refrigerators on the wards as needed. Utilizing a variety of reference materials to determine specimen and storage requirements, quantity, patient preparation, etc. Receiving accessioning and processing of laboratory specimens from the main draw room, emergency department (ED), ward collect specimens, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) and Home Base Health Care (HBHC) patient draws. Observing and processing of employee drug screen testing. Entering pathology biopsy specimens from hospital and clinics, into the laboratory computer reporting system, preparing specimen cassettes, and preparing bar code labels for specimens. Processing send out specimens and storing specimens according to specimen storage requirements (i.e., ambient, frozen, or refrigerated). Performing other duties as assigned.
