The Medical Technician II D serves as a phlebotomist in the clinical laboratory, bone marrow assistant for the clinician and specimen receiving and processing technician. The applicant is responsible for assuring that proper technique is used for specimen collection, computer accessioning, labeling, and must ensure that patients are accurately identified. This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI. This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the experience referenced above for this grade level you may also possess the following specialized experience: possessing knowledge in the various types and sizes of tubes used for collection; verifying correct patient identification; performing routine and emergency waived testing procedures such as glucose monitoring, urine pregnancy and occult blood testing; preparing slides, smears, cultures of extremely delicate or otherwise volatile specimens; performing urine drug testing collections in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. OR Education: MUST have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a Bachelors' degree, with major study or at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
