The Primary Purpose of the Position is: To provide phlebotomy and technical support to the medical technologists and physicians directly and indirectly utilizing services of the clinical laboratories and perform ancillary testing and technical duties as appropriate. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/28/2022. Candidates must meet the following Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): Specialized Experience GS-4: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR Education and Training GS-4: Successful completion of: (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (Transcripts Required); (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3 (Transcripts Required) ; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. (Transcripts Required) You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience GS-4: You must have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience would typically include but are not limited to: knowledge of approved venipuncture specimen collection techniques, patient identification, and specimen handling. Knowledge of laboratory test requirements necessary to select and use the appropriate equipment and materials. Knowledge of patient identification methods and procedures established by regulatory and accrediting agencies, designed to prevent misidentification which could result in severe patient compromise or morbidity. Knowledge of specimen handling requirements. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation. Proficiently collects blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required resticks. Ensures that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with least possible delay. Recollects patient specimens when determined by the medical technologists to be inadequate or insufficient to meet the test requirements. Collects additional samples as required for the purpose of performing additional requested testing. Collects blood samples ln the manner described by the College of American Pathologists'(CAP) as well as the written guidelines of P&LMS. Prepares samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections. Receives and sorts specimens. Checks request slips for proper information, and time stamp the request slip. Times in and deliver specimens to various laboratory sections. Centrifuges, decants, and aliquots specimens as appropriate. Performs ancillary support testing. Performs ancillary testing such as CLIA waived testing and operates instrumentation necessary for testing. Manages specimen workload to prevent back log. Contacts necessary medical staff for corrections to orders as needed. Manually accessions orders for testing. Performs daily calibration and quality control for instrumentation. Manually records patient results for data entry to VISTA. Receives patients in the outpatient phlebotomy area and supports areas with supplies and materials used for phlebotomy services. Checks patients into the outpatient phlebotomy area. Verifies patient information and tests ordered in the computer system. Organizes workflow. Provides customer service to all patients arriving in the laboratory for blood collection. Distributes, stores, and delivers supplies and other materials used for phlebotomy service. Cleans and restocks the blood collection room and areas where collection trays and equipment are stored. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, multiple tours on day and evening shifts. Rotating weekends and holidays.
