The Phlebotomist is responsible for accessioning specimens or patient tissue materials for testing including packaging specimens or tissue materials to be sent out to referring laboratory. The Phlebotomist works closely with all laboratory staff, medical staff, and external customers. The Phlebotomist performs customer service functions including telephone etiquette and basic troubleshooting and problem resolution. Patient care provider will possess knowledge, training, experience, and be competent in the following specific to the age of patients served; the ability to obtain and interpret information; a knowledge of growth and development; and an understanding of the range of treatments needed by these patients. The patients served include all age groups as follows: neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
Collecting venous and capillary whole blood specimens
Chain of Custody urine and venous blood specimens
Accessioning, labeling, procuring specimens for testing and transport
Registering patients and placing or deleting test orders in EMR/LIS, operation of LIS
Assisting technologists and Administrative Laboratory Director with laboratory operation as requested and where appropriate as check competent
The Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital Diagnostic Lab consists of Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Reference Lab, Blood Bank, and Coagulation. The Lab processes over 6,000 tests weekly and utilize cutting-edge EMR and LIS system. This is a 24- hour operation with 8 hours shifts will experienced Phlebotomy support. Every other weekend required and holiday rotation.
