SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The medical laboratory technician, under minimal supervision, is responsible for independently performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues that includes standardized microscopic, chemical, and/or bacteriological testing. All testing is performed in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, FDA, CAP, OSHA, CLIA, and Joint Commission regulations and guidelines. Test results are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
Ability to identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms
Ability to perform blood bank testing functions
Ability to perform chemistry, hematology, coagulation testing
Assess the validity of test results, preserves proper records of the results, and makes a report of the result
Assures the testing method follows established quality control procedures
Ability to participate in and understand laboratory quality assurance and process improvement activities
Assists in the teaching of new employees and students.
Associates degree for Medical Laboratory Technician or bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution required.
MLT(ASCP)- Medical Laboratory Technician, American Society of Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) required
