The Blood Bank Lead is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. This position will be required to function as the lead technologist in the supervisor’s absence. Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists III evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist III will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions.
Responsibilities Financial Performance • Demonstrates stewardship of resources in regards to inventory, time management, and meeting productivity standards
Operational Effectiveness o Performs the full range of testing and reporting according to department policies and procedures as required o Accurately performs and records quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance o Organizes, prioritizes and completes work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations o Functions as the lead supervisory technologist in the supervisor’s absence. o Troubleshoots and resolves problems or unexpected test results, in a timely manner ? Documents and communicate to appropriate stakeholders ? Completes incidence reports as necessary o Participates in maintaining current department policies and procedures o Communicates professionally and effectively with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, vendors and the public o Demonstrates appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, internet, etc.) o Assist with the creation of new department policies and procedures o Performs the acquisition, labeling, and transfer of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing: utilizing accurate, effective, professional, and confidential accepted methodologies as required o Performs all tasks associated with processing, transfer and referral of required laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and departmental policies as required
Workplace Excellence o Complies with laboratory management requests to meet staffing plans and department needs o Demonstrates initiative to assist the laboratory in all areas o Works collaboratively with all co-workers to accomplish laboratory, department, or hospital goals o Attends departmental, laboratory and hospital meetings as required o Participates in the training and education of others as requested o Actively monitors and maintains inventory of reagents and supplies o Orders inventory of reagents and supplies as required o Acts as a mentor for others o Demonstrates ability to maintain a calm work environment through the use of conflict resolution, encouragement, motivational skills and other o Performs other duties as required
Quality o Reviews and evaluates quality control in accordance with quality plan ? Documents findings and implements corrective action o Demonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility o Reviews, evaluates and correlates laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures o Communicates and documents critical information according to policies and procedures o Recognizes, identifies and engages in opportunities for process improvement o Ensures quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing o Participates in proficiency testing o Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements o Complies with all hospital and laboratory policies and procedures o Participates in collection of process improvement data o Participates in collection and review of process improvement data o Participates in projects or on committees within the laboratory o Assists with validation and verification of new instruments, test kits or other o Completes assigned projects within the time frame provided o Acts as a liaison with other departments for the laboratory o Actively participates in meeting accreditation standards o Creates materials for the training, education, and competency of others o Develops and delivers continuing education and competency to laboratory co-workers o Coordinates proficiency testing in the department o Coordinates process improvement projects o Creates monitors for process improvement o Leads projects or on committees within the hospital o Researches new instruments, methods, kits, or other o Leads validation and verification studies of new instruments, test kits or other o Functions as the primary “go to” person for an instrument, process, test menu, LIS, or other o Participate as an inspection team member as required o Demonstrates less than 2 errors, requiring patient chart revision, in a continuous 12 month period o Functions as Lead MT when required.
Continuing Education a. Accumulates a minimum of 12 CEU per year i. Accepted CEU 1. Educational programs such webinars, on-line education, conferences, classes, etc. a. Programs must be related to medical laboratory science or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital b. A certificate of attendance or other documentation of completion is required 2. Other developmental opportunities Must be approved by laboratory management prior to commencement Laboratory management will determine CEU award b. Completes mandatory courses on time
Education: Bachelors degree required
Experience: Four years or more of acceptable clinical laboratory experience, at least two of which must be in Blood Bank. Functions as a leader in laboratory operations
Certifications: 1. Current certification as medical technologist/medical laboratory scientist or categorical MT/MLS certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent a. If ASCP certification was achieved after January 1, 2004, continuing certification maintenance must be documented to insure continuous and current certification
