This position is responsible for ensuring the transfusion service is in compliance with all accrediting agencies. Ensures the timely completion of test procedures; interacts with medical and nursing staff to ensure efficient patient care.
Major Position Responsibilities:
Ensures that the transfusion service department is in compliance with all accrediting and regulatory agency standards, to include but not limited to College of American Pathologist Laboratory Accreditation Program, California Department of Public Health, CLIA ’88 regulations, FDA, American Association of Blood Banks, Patient Blood Management Standards with The Joint Commission and Cal-OSHA.
Provides on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to the transfusion department; maintains effective communication with staff, co-workers, physicians, and other hospital personnel, outside organizations or others who provide or receive laboratory services.
Assists the laboratory leadership in the selection of the test methodology that is appropriate for the clinical use of the test results.
Purchases or directs purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies; evaluates and verifies new instrumentation and procedures; ensures completion of department instrumentation maintenance and service procedures; writes and updates technical procedures and ensures that all technical procedures are reviewed in accordance to accrediting agency guidelines; monitors department inventory appropriately.
Appropriately coordinates proficiency testing in accordance with the department test menu and trained personnel.
Maintains an appropriate laboratory quality assurance program including the development of department quality performance indicators and quality control procedures, for the entire testing process (pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic).
Appropriately resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications; ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
Participates in interviews of applicants and makes recommendations for hiring; maintains and coordinates an appropriate training and competency program in accordance with regulations of all testing personnel in the transfusion department; provides input to leadership regarding employee performance for possible disciplinary action and for performance appraisals.
Works in production to maintain technical competency in all areas of responsibility, to fill-in during breaks, short-staffing, excess workload, and/or complex procedures.
Responsible for the training and orientation of new employees.
Represents the Laboratory on the Blood Utilization Review Committee.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Must have a minimum of four years previous laboratory experience in the subspecialty of immunohematology, required.
Five (5) years’ experience with increasing responsibility directly related to clinical laboratory, preferred.
Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge and expertise in immunohematology, required.
Familiarity with FDA, AABB, and CLIA regulations, quality control evaluation, proficiency testing requirements and safety requirements, preferred.
Possesses written and verbal skills which clearly communicate testing protocols and training for the staff.
Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.
Must be capable of applying excellent judgment and communication skills to the job.
Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge and expertise in Immunohematology.
Meets education requirements for CLS Licensure.
Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License or Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist License, required.
SBB (ASCP) – Specialist in Blood Banking Technology through American Society for Clinical Pathology, preferred.
