The Autotransfusionist is a clinician who operates cell salvage equipment during medical procedures that expect significant blood loss during the intra-operative period. The Autotransfusionist chooses the appropriate equipment for each procedure, sets up and operates the cell salvage machine, and prepares the processed red blood cells for safe re-infusion to the patient. The Autotransfusionist is also responsible for performing administrative duties for the INOVA Perfusion Services Department. These include, but are not limited to, maintenance of accreditation, teaching, and training as assigned by the Director of Perfusion Services or defined by departmental policy. The individual must possess knowledge of current practices in the field of autotransfusion and blood conservation , Joint Commission, H.I.P.P.A. standards , and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) standards. The Autotransfusionist will complete the Peri-operative Blood Management Technologist Certification provided by the International Board of Blood Management.
