A Medical Technologist performs analysis on a variety of body fluids using sophisticated clinical diagnostic equipment. This individual performs Waived, Moderate and High complexity tests as authorized by the Medical Director. Assay results are evaluated for accuracy in accordance with
instrument limitations, laboratory policy, and physiological probability. Equipment maintenance is an integral part of the performance of laboratory testing. Medical Technologists may assume the responsibility of the Technical Specialist in their absence.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Follow safety policies and procedures relevant to all assigned duties. Includes, but not limited to OSHA Health and Safety regulations and Standard Precautions.
- Reports defective equipment, devices or hazardous situations, accidents, safety infractions or any unusual incidents.
- Requires excellent communication and customer service skills. Answers telephone calls according to organizational standard. Routes telephone calls to appropriate clinical laboratory area, calls critical values to physicians and other clinical healthcare individuals, responds to requests for information regarding laboratory services.
- Perform waived, moderate and high complexity testing in all sections of the laboratory (Chemistry, Microbiology, Serology, Hematology and Transfusion Medicine) using appropriate laboratory procedures and equipment. Testing may include automation or manual methods including microscopy and visual inspection of agglutination tests. Remain at various workstations for long periods of time with the demonstrated ability to move freely from work area to work area assisting others as workload directs.Able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, work independently without direct supervision. Complete work in all areas neatly and according to protocol. Completes all forms, worksheets and logs in a legible manner. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Prepare reagents, solutions, standards and controls in a manner consistent with good laboratory practice and according to established laboratory procedures. Use laboratory supplies in a cost-effective manner. Check and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory materials. Request replenishments as required.
- Remain current regarding laboratory policies and procedures. Recommend improvements. Participate in Continuing Education, in-house and outside seminars, reading , organizational and department staff meetings, etc.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies; document all Q.C. activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.Perform daily, weekly, monthly and other periodic preventive maintenance as required on various laboratory instruments. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Follow through problems and service as related to those instruments.
- Follow the laboratory's established polices and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Ability to utilize critical thinking skills to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and takes appropriate action to resolve the problem or immediately notify the Technical Specialist.
- Correlate assay results with diagnosis, question results that do not seem to "fit" the clinical picture or are physiologically improbable. Use good judgment skills to reject specimens not appropriate for testing. Accurately interpret assay limitations and criteria for repeat analysis. Follow established protocol for notification of critical "panic" values.
- Adequate knowledge of processing functions in the LIS and HIS to register, order, receive, and reject specimens. Retrieve patient results in the LIS and HIS upon request from physicians and other clinical healthcare individuals. Respond to requests for information in a timely, efficient, and courteous manner.
- Work as an integral part of the clinical laboratory team; including ability to respond to changes in work schedule or workload volume.
- Able to multitask and work all departments including Blood Bank. Have computer skilkls & knowledge of laboratory instruments
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and licensure requirements
To perform this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each essential duty proficiently. The incumbent must have the prescribed technical training from an approved school of Medical Technology, in addition to a Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited school or equivocal recognition of the Medical Technologist designation from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or an equivalently recognized certification agency.
MT/MLS/MLT/ASCP eligible applies to new graduates only.
Minimum: graduate of accredited Medical Technology program as prescribed in education/licensure requirements.
