Visit: www.svh-mt.org Description In this position, the Lab Operations Technician is responsible for operations and customer service in the sample receiving and distribution area of the Laboratory Essential Duties and Responsibilities Receiving and Distribution Order in-house and reference lab tests from within St Vincent Healthcare and from outlying clinics Maintains equipment and documentation, sorts and packages specimens for specific departments, routes all printed blood bank orders Retrieves and reconciles the outstanding accession number report (LO) Performs Hospital Information System (HIS) patient registration, determines if specimen rejection is appropriate at the CS/R&D level and reconciles outstanding orders for reference testing from HIS print out Maintains and receives stock / stocks and maintains work area Completes reporting to the Montana State Lab of required reportable infectious diseases tests. Identifies the presence and/or quality of specimens appropriate for receipt and testing. Reports lack of compliance on specimen integrity and/or required volumes, temperature and transport environment. Works with references laboratories on any changes in protocol, specimen requirements, reflex testing and/or new test menu additions. Work closely with both providers and nursing staff to insure that appropriate tests panels are selected or ordered. Assist providers in selection of reference laboratories that provide appropriate testing and turnaround time for esoteric test menus. Serves as a technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks. Technical Responsibilities Acts as a resource/reference for physicians, nurses and Lab staff regarding laboratory testing Research laboratory testing, locating reference lab and testing requirements for drawing and shipping sample Accurately labels and receives laboratory specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) Customer Service Answers customer service phone calls and channels them to appropriate areas Resolves issues/complaints that arise with physicians and other healthcare providers Ability to multitask in telephone, electronic and written communications. Demonstrate a command of medical language and mneumonics. Ability to work under stressful and time dependent deadlines Qualifications Bachelor degree in Laboratory Science or a related science. Current BLS certification or ability to obtain within three months of employment Phlebotomy experience preferred Minimum one year work experience utilizing customer service skills as demonstrated through work experience.
