Clinical Scientist II – Cellular Therapy Lab – Orlando

Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Established in March of 2011, the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute-Translational Research Core (FHCI-TRC) laboratory provides the infrastructure and scientific support to our physicians as an onsite laboratory facility for collaborative in-house and external innovative research studies aimed at improving patient care and outcomes. Our goals include fostering research at FHCI using our expertise in clinical oncology and access to clinical data and fresh/archived specimens to advance the treatment of our cancer patients. FHCI-TRC is deeply committed to the education of physician scientists in oncology research through joint projects with our residents/attending physicians through the Tumor Site Practice Groups of FHCI throughout the Florida Hospital system and with UCF medical students.
Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm (variable day shift hours and rare Saturday and Sunday)
The Clinical Scientist II will be an experienced, advanced and specialized medical technologist with significant expertise in specific high complexity clinical laboratory specialty, performing all test procedures accurately, promptly and with little, if any, direct supervision. He/she will deputize for senior staff, operationally, technically and administratively. He/she answers technical questions, troubleshoots problems, oversees less experienced staff, and takes an active role in the evaluation, and implementation of new instrumentation and methodologies. He/she will take an active supervisory role of other less experienced staff and have individual responsibilities for special projects. Additionally, he/she takes an active, high profile role in clinical research projects, being flexible to frequent changes in priorities, timeframes, and methodologies. He/she is responsible for maintaining and reporting accurate research data for subsequent scientific publications and presentations. In these ways, the position holder actively contributes to providing outstanding customer service, accepts responsibility for maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all, and clearly demonstrates accountability for his/her own actions and decisions. Significant experience in the advanced specialty testing of the appropriate subsection, and will demonstrate considerable technical and troubleshooting skills
Exhibit a professional attitude and conduct, possess the ability to communicate at different levels of education, be able to maintain composure under pressure, be flexible enough to accommodate rapidly changing priorities, and be capable of performing multiple concomitant assignments in a timely manner
Able to work independently, to implement new ideas where appropriate, and be able to fully research, troubleshoot and report on technical issues
Possess the ability to deal with personnel issues as required in an intermediate supervisory position.
Evidence of supervisory skills, both from a personnel aspect as well as a technical aspect
Evidence of independent decision-making, answering technical questions and troubleshooting technical problems with consummate ease
Ability to clearly and promptly report back on findings and issues
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Clinical Laboratory Science
At least three years experience in a licensed clinical laboratory, performing the advanced high complexity tests in the appropriate subspecialty, to a constant high standard
Demonstrable computer skills, with specific competency in computer software applications including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint. Additional experience in statistical analysis is an advantage (preferred)
Evidence of good technical troubleshooting skills (preferred)
Experience in academic or clinical research (preferred)
Previous supervisory experience, both personnel and technical (preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Florida State Medical Technologist Licensure in the appropriate clinical laboratory subspecialty (Hematology, Blood Bank)

He/she will adhere to Florida Hospital, State of Florida and federal clinical laboratory rules, regulations and guidelines, and assist in continuously improving all issues related to compliance. He/she will also ensure that staff under their direct supervision is fully compliant with such regulations.
He/she will perform all technical procedures to a high level of proficiency commensurate with an individual holding a Medical Technologist license and an intermediate supervisory laboratory position, within a dynamic and rapidly changing working environment. He/she will assist in writing and maintaining technical and administrative Policies and Procedures related to their area of specialty, and when necessary, deputize for senior staff in routine operational matters.
He/she will constantly strive to improve the quality of patient testing by ensuring that all clinical testing is performed to the highest levels of proficiency, and assist with all necessary proficiency testing, quality control procedures and quality improvement initiatives. He/she will assist the senior staff in compiling and reporting such data according to Clinical Laboratory regulations accurately and in a timely manner.
He/she will play a significant role in assisting less experienced staff to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues. The position holder will supervise staff to ensure that they accurately follow policies and procedures and provide accurate and timely reports on all patient samples, quality control and proficiency materials. He/she will demonstrate independent decision making, composure under pressure, be sufficiently flexible to accommodate rapidly changing priorities, and be capable of performing multiple concomitant assignments in a timely manner.
He/she will take a leading role in evaluating, reporting, offering constructive and positive suggestions and where appropriate, implementing new technologies and ideas as required by the Chief or Senior Scientists or Laboratory Director, presenting compiled data as necessary to senior staff. He/she will be expected to participate in training staff on new testing and instrumentation, in order to accommodate rapidly changing priorities and needs of the clinical and research services.
He/she will provide appropriate support for departmental research activities relevant to their specific clinical testing area on an as-needed basis. In addition, he/she will participate actively in departmental research activities, and encourage other staff to develop in and contribute to this area, while assisting in maintaining an efficient clinical laboratory service. The position holder will report all new findings and issues arising to the Senior and Chief Clinical Scientists and Laboratory Director as necessary.
He/she will actively participate in personal developmental growth within the sub specialty area and by taking advantage of departmental seminars, educational and research opportunities. The Clinical Scientist II will actively and independently study to extend their theoretical knowledge of the relevant specialty area, and will clearly demonstrate this through participation in Departmental Meetings and Journal Clubs, and their interactions with other laboratory and hospital staff.
He/she will contribute to providing the highest levels of customer service, by actively participating in inter-department communications relevant to both clinical and research aspects of the clinical laboratory. Such communication will include, but will not be limited to, departmental clinical and research staff, nursing, pathology, pharmacy, physicians and staff from various non-clinical areas, and will be focused towards achieving outstanding customer service. He/she will accept the inherent responsibility that relationships created during communications with others will be equally respectful to all.
