The Program Manager, Patient Blood Management is a Registered Nurse, who in close coordination with the Anticoagulation and Blood Products Subcommittee Chair, is responsible for the development, implementation and operationalization of the Patient Blood Management (PBM) Program. The PBM Program Manager helps monitor, evaluate and improve appropriate and alternative transfusion practices, blood conservation techniques, a bloodless surgery program and evidence-based guidelines for transfusion medicine across the care continuum. The position manages a number of metrics for blood management including: patient safety and satisfaction, medical risks, quality outcomes, scarcity of the resource, religious decisions, and financial costs. Strong communication and analytical skills are required to gather and disseminate information for culture change.
This position provides clinical leadership and expertise in the management of the program, utilizing evidence based standards and careful stewardship of resources to promote conservation and appropriate use of blood products and/or their alternatives to enhance the care of medical and surgical patients at Oregon Health and Science University. The PBM Program Manager integrates with other specialties/departments to promote the PBM as an additional component in marketing OHSU as the Provider of Choice for this region. He/she individualizes care and consultation on both adult and pediatric patients using age appropriate and clinically sound practices.

The requirements to enter into this next career move is the following:
At least 3 years of current clinical practice
• Advanced interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
• Expert clinical/professional knowledge in the area of transfusion and/or patient blood management in an acute setting.
• Expert knowledge and application of change management. Performance improvement and program development.
• Expert knowledge and application of research and principles of evidence-based practice • Experience in education of healthcare providers, patients and family members.
• Experience in the gathering and analysis of data in order to promote change/improvement. • Experience in program development/expansion to meet program needs.
