The Transfusion Services Hospital Laboratory Assistant has a technical assignment in the following area: Transfusion Services (aka Blood Bank). Within this specialized field of Transfusion Services, the incumbent will perform a limited variety of specialized laboratory procedures and duties according to FDA and AABB regulations. The Transfusion Services Hospital Laboratory Assistant utilizes a generalized theoretical background which directly supports patient care.REQUIRED--Knowledge of laboratory and transfusion medicine technical terminology.--Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, LIS, email, and Microsoft Office Suite.--Possesses skills to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.--Strong multitasking skills to handle emergency situations consistent with a Level 1 Trauma Center.PREFERRED --Knowledge of transfusion medicine basics including: ABO, Rh, types of blood products, blood temperature requirements, component preparation, shipping requirements, etc.) --Knowledge of patients' special blood needs/requirements such as irradiation, CMV negative, washed, and antigen negative units.--Knowledge of blood acceptability criteria such as temperature, hemolysis, clots, fibrin and bacterial contamination.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT - THIS POSITION MAY BE SUBJECT TO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG SCREEN, LIVE SCAN FINGERPRINTING, MEDICAL EVALUATION CLEARANCE, AND FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENT
